What:

The Portsmouth Wi-Fi Project was created as a resource to promote wireless Internet awareness and usage. The project initially consists of:

  1. A wi-fi news and information web site where hotspot owners will list their publicly-available networks, i.e., this site.
  2. A free public wi-fi access point, located in the information kiosk in Market Square. Click here for fun iPIX images of the kiosk.
Wi-Fi (short for wireless fidelity) the commonly used term for 802.11-based wireless technology. More on 802.11 to come.

The downtown Portsmouth wi-fi hotspot, set up and organized by Crago and Campbell, is maintained by the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, BayRing and Port City Web, LLC.

Who:

The Portsmouth Wi-Fi Project was founded by Erik Crago and D. Scott Campbell. They would also like to acknowledge the contributions of the following people who helped make parts of this project possible:

When:

The project was launched on June 19, 2003, when this site was launched for public access.

The downtown kiosk wi-fi hotspot initiated by Crago and Campbell is a temporary pilot program. The hotspot maintained in the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce information kiosk will be active through the summer and fall of 2003.

Why:

Why did we do it? We thought it would be a nice way to contribute to the community while promoting the innovation and entrepreneurial spirit of the eCoast. Plus, we feel like we should get outside more often in the summer, and this was the only way we could do that and still get our e-mail. ;-)
